4th Summer School on Environmental Psychology (30th May – 03rd
June 2023) at the Baltic Sea at the International Academy for
Nature Conservation, Isle of Vilm

Environmental psychology investigates human behaviour that affects environment and nature,
but also how nature and the environment affect human behaviour and experience. For example,
it deals with the perception of environmental concerns, the psychological consequences of
pollution, and both structural as well as psychological conditions of pro-environmental action. Pro-
environmental behaviour is empirically studied both within explicit environmental psychological
research approaches as well as within other sub-disciplines of psychological science, such as
social and personality psychology. In the context of social and environmental policy-making,
research findings from environmental psychology become increasingly relevant and
acknowledged.

The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, in close collaboration with researchers from the
University of Kaiserslautern-Landau, organizes the "4th Summer School on Environmental
Psychology" to offer space for presenting and discussing current and future environmental
psychological research. The Summer School focuses on results, theory and methods of empirical
psychological research on topics regarding environmental and nature protection, policy making, as
well as on their practical relevance (e.g., in designing interventions or communication strategies for
nature and environmental protection). On our homepage, interested readers can find information
on our previous Summer Schools (https://vilmworkshop.jimdofree.com/)

From 30th May to 3rd June 2023, PhD students and other early-career researchers (e.g., advanced
MSc students) working in the field of environmental psychology research as well as international
experts of basic and applied research are invited to Vilm Island. Over these days, recent findings
in environmental psychology will be discussed and participants will have the opportunity to receive
feedback on their own research by invited experts and the participants. The Summer School takes
place at the International Academy for Nature Conservation on the small picturesque Baltic Isle of
Vilm (https://www.bfn.de/en/int-academy.html).

12 graduate students and young scientists will be given the opportunity to present and discuss
their own empirical research. Speakers will be selected based on quality and thematic fit of
the submitted abstracts (maximum 200 words; please provide information about theory,
research question, methods, results and implications).
Research proposals should be based on already collected and analysed empirical data
but should leave room for discussion on further studies. For these 12 speakers,
accommodation and full board will be covered. Conference language is English.
We invite interested people to submit their abstract until 28th February , 2023. Feedback
will be given by 15th March 2023 at the latest.

Please send the abstract to:
kuhlmann@uni-landau.de
Jonathan Kuhlmann (University of Kaiserslautern - Landau)
In addition, three internationally renowned researchers (including one "Young Keynote") will
participate as keynote speakers and teachers. They will join the discussions and offer workshops
on their own fields of research (Workshop titles and themes will be announced as soon as
possible).

We are pleased to welcome:
